A few photos from my build of the 1/72 Airfix Starter Set Hurricane model.

To add a little detail I fabricated seatbelts from flattened lead wire, and apart from the ariel cable this was the only scratch-building or “after-market” detailing added – so I am happy to class this as an ‘out of the box’ build. Unfortunately I split the canopy in two down the middle when masking, but I think with I managed to get away with this by using some thin PVA to join the two halves.

I used a Tamiya standard grey paint for the primer, which was thinned with Iso-Propo Alcohol. The main paints were Vallejo Model Air. For quickness (and also to experiment with the technique) I painted the camouflage free-hand with the airbrush. In reality I should have used masking for harder edges; though I think the softer edges do work on the model.

The paint, once cured, was sealed with Pledge floor polish, giving a good base the decals. The decals went down well over the various lumps and bumps.

Panel lining was accented using Mig Ammo panel line wash. The brown of this wash not only makes the fine details stand out more effectively, but also helps give the model a slightly more weathered and worn look – acting like a filter.

Further weathering was added lightly in areas using dots of oil paint, which were worked in with a brush. I was pleased with the overall result of “clean, but slightly used”, which was the look I was going for as feels more realistic, but still shows the details of a clean model.
